New Orleans' rental assistance program is helping as many residents as possible
Keeping residents in their homes is a top priority for Mayor Cantrell's administration.
When the pandemic hit, thousands of New Orleanians lost their jobs or other sources of income and have struggled to pay rent as a result. In response, Mayor Cantrell led the effort to develop an emergency rental assistance program that has helped thousands of residents stay in their homes.

By providing relief money to renters and landlords, Mayor Cantrell's administration has prevented thousands of New Orleanians from facing homelessness. The City has already spent all the money it can on rental assistance, but there is still more need.
To date, the City of New Orleans has spent more money on rental assistance than the states of Mississippi and Alabama combined.
More money has been allocated to New Orleans for rental assistance, but unfortunately it has not yet reached the city.
More than half of the federal aid that was allocated to New Orleans for rental assistance is still sitting at the state level.
However, the city is working with the state to get these funds transferred. As soon as the city receives this money, it will distribute it quickly and efficiently to residents in need.

In May 2018 Mayor LaToya Cantrell was the first Black woman to be sworn in as mayor of New Orleans. She did so with the support of the Higher Heights for America PAC, and they have now endorsed her candidacy for re-election. "We have made so much progress for Black women throughout my first term like enrolling over 1,000 families in healthy start, increasing access to early childhood education, and mandating at least 35% Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) participation in city contracts. I know that the progress we make in my second term will further set New Orleans up for generations of success." In her second term, Mayor Cantrell is committed to implementing innovative new programs designed to reduce crime, investing in more resilient infrastructure, combatting the legacy of exclusionary housing zoning policies, and investing more in our city's youth & families.

The U.S. Treasury announced today that New Orleans will receive millions in additional funding for emergency rental assistance. We were one of only seven cities and states across the country that met the requirements for additional funding. The city was eligible for additional funding because it has already successfully distributed $24.7 million in rental assistance. The Treasury said that the City of New Orleans "has focused a lot of efforts on community awareness through neighborhood engagement events. They also are actively working with the courts to help those facing eviction receive fast tracked emergency rental assistance."
